Refuge
Product Label MSDS Sheet

Refuge™ herbicide is a nonselective systemic herbicide containing the equivalent of 5 pounds of glyphosate acid per gallon, the most concentrated glyphosate you can buy. That is 25% more active ingredient and 20% fewer jugs to handle than competitive products like Rodeo® and Aqua Star™ herbicides.

Refuge controls more than 170 emerged annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds and unwanted woody brush and trees. It can be used in a wide range of vegetation management use areas including aquatic and wetland sites.

Product Highlights:

  • Non-volatile; Refuge will not move as a vapor after application onto non-target vegetation.
  • Can be broadcast applied through ground application or by air.
  • Controls emerged, floating, and marginal weeds in aquatic and wetland sites.
  • Controls woody brush, trees and cut stump regrowth (as specified on the label).
  • 5 pounds of Acid Equivalent per gallon
  • Rainfast two hours after application

Refuge provides broad-spectrum control of emerged weeds and brush that is labeled for use on aquatic and wetland sites, forestry, railroad, utility, and other vegetation management sites.

How It Works

Refuge™ herbicide's active ingredient is glyphosate. Its primary mode of action involves inactivation of the target enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS). This enzyme is involved in the synthesis of several essential amino acids that are the building blocks for proteins needed for plant growth and development. In susceptible weeds, glyphosate binds tightly to EPSPS rendering the enzyme inactive. With the inactivation of EPSPS, the plant is unable to produce certain essential amino acids resulting in plant death.

Application

Refuge may be applied using a sprayer. Doseage rates vary by target plant species. Normal application rates range from 0.8 to 1.6 oz per gallon of water. See specimen label for specific plant target rates. Add a non-ionic spray surfactant such as Cygnet Plus for increased effectiveness. In areas where drift is a concern add Poly-An instead.

*Consult label for exact doseage and dilution rates.

For Best Results

Heavy, out of control growth may require more than one application or physical removal to gain control. For best results, use under conditions of minimal water flow. Apply early on the morning of a calm, sunny day. Contact time should be at least 3 hours.

Notices

Treatment effectiveness depends on density of vegetation and time of year at which the herbicide was applied. In some cases multiple treatments may be required.

*All pesticides can be harmful to health and the environment if misused. Read the label and follow directions. Consult with your local regulatory agency before applying herbicides and algaecides to public waters. There are herbicides from other states that are either not licensed in Wisconsin or Illinois, or are not recommended by ABI.

A WI DNR Aquatic Plant Control Permit or DATCP Fish Farm License is required in WI in order to apply algaecides or herbicides. In addition ponds and lakes with overflows not contained on the property are required to obtain a WPDES permit. Illinois Residents are required to obtiain NPDES permits through the Illinois EPA.

In order to apply chemicals in liquid form within Wisconsin, the applicator must be licensed with the State.

Recommendations of pesticide or treatments for specific algae or aquatic plants are provided for general information purposes only - no warranties are expressed or implied.
